Wall Piece CUT!

Remember those computer drawings? Here it is. The final laser cut steel wall piece. It is approximately 15"x10"x4". It is riveted together with brass tubing. I am super happy with this piece. Everyone loved it. It was the perfect addition to my body of work. Ponoko was great. They helped me every step of the way with the file and with shipping.

Laser Cut jewelry

These are my laser cut drawings brought to life. All cut out of acrylic and made into jewelry. I am in the process of making more to sell.
Here are some images from my exhibit. It went so incredibly well! Chris Irick, the Metal/Jewelry professor from Pratt MWP took a look. She enjoyed it. I am so proud of myself. Finally, I feel accomplished!

wall piece

This is one piece to my wall piece that will be laser cut. Essentially, I want to create a dome effect with two hemispheres bisecting one another. The next part is figuring out how the slot and tabs will work, or whether I scrap that and rivet it somehow.

POST CARD!

here she is, my postcard!

laser cutting

I am lucky and get to experiment with the laser cutter in the Tech Dept. I learned how to use the machine. I will be cutting out acrylic earrings in the machine. Also, I will create a smaller model of my wall piece to figure out how it will work when it is in steel. SO MUCH TO DO.

These designs are based around tape worms. I have to stick with my theme, so I abstracted them into simpler and "prettier" forms.

Nose plugs

Here she is. My baby nose plugs. These are etched with a lace texture. I wanted to make a pair of fashionable protective nose plugs. They are meant to protect you from the hundreds of diseases that can make you ugly, sick, and gross. However, when you put these in your nose, they distort your nose entirely. They also look ridiculous in the nose. So it is more of a mocking idea than anything.

Smallpox Ring

The inspiration behind this piece was smallpox. Most of the deformities and diseases I come across don't really bother me. Although, when I came to smallpox I think I gagged. The texture of it is what gets me. I wanted to recreate this texture and make it the focal point. Rings are usually made pretty. You generally want to show it off to your friends. That is why I made this disease into a ring. I wanted to make it seem prettier than it is. I could not get rid of the texture though. I had to make that bumpy and goopy looking.

Elephantitis

Granted, this does not make ones body large and girthy and mammoth, however, it is a stylized representation of it. I really liked the forms I created with the tiara, and I wanted to replicate them on another part of the body. It is all of copper. I used an iridescent white powder with orange dye oxide on the inside of the pods. The outside is liver os sulfur that I dried with the heat gun to alter the colors slightly.

Tiara final.

This is my tiara project from 2011. It is based on the elephant man. I set a druzy stone in the bottom portion of it. The rest is made out of copper. I used black and brown dye oxides on the copper. Then, I placed it into a bin of ammonia and wood chips. It was buried for 48 hours.

Finished work!

photos by Bruce Fox.

These are all based on Dermoid cysts. I wanted them to be in your face and on your face. I ma happy with them. The last one is my least favorite. I don't find nearly as successful as the other two. These are made out of copper, steel and silver.

Series

There are only three vessels now, but I am in the process of planishing two others to make it a series of five. All based around some of the most deadly skin diseases.

Vessel magic

This is from Metalsmithing 1. It is based on yes, tumors and blisters. Go figure. It started off as a 12" disc. I was pretty proud of myself.

some semi professional images

These are fashionable and useful nose plugs that protect your delicate nostrils from scary and gross diseases. HA.

Back piece progress

This piece kind of parallels my tiara. It is an Elephant man, tumor-y kind of piece. This turned out more elegant than I thought. I still have to finish the surface of i, clean up and a patina. I am shooting for an orange/red glow to it. Hopefully, I can make it work for my photo shoot on March 9th!

Mouth Piece

Essentially this is what this mouth piece will look like. I still have some clean up to do on it, however it is so nice to see it almost finished. I like making progress. Now, I have to have this photographed and figure out how to display it at my exhibition.

Finger Locks

I am slowly dragging my feet through the process of finishing this. It is a piece that restricts the movement of your fingers, but it also contorts your hand entirely. It is very uncomfortable so far, however it is taking me quite some time to finish it.

sketches and problem solving

I am working on a hand piece that spreads your fingers apart in unbearable ways. It makes the wearer uncomfortable as well as restricts their movement. This is my first sketch. I have the pieces all made. I am working on soldering them together.

I HAVE RETURNED!

I have spent all day doing research and sketching. Good news, I contacted Space 224. My show will be there either the first week of April or the first week of May. I am trying my hardest to be a part of the First Friday exhibits. I figure that way my show will have a little more traffic going through it.

Anyways, I closed out the Fall semester working on a series of vessels. Of course, I want to make more. I have come up with two other ideas for vessels to fit within that series. Also, I came across this amazing Blog! AHHHH! it is visual heaven for me.

This site has made me want to make more vessels. Vessel crazy right now.

Hopefully I can upload some sketches soon. I have become obsessed with created extensions of the body that limit movement or just make you uncomfortable in a sense. However this still all focuses greatly on body oddities of course.
